Tribhuvan University (TU), Nepal’s oldest and largest academic institution, has officially initiated the process to appoint its next Vice-Chancellor. A total of 12 candidates have submitted their applications for the prestigious leadership position.

On Jestha 6, Prime Minister and TU Chancellor KP Sharma Oli formed a three-member Vice-Chancellor Recommendation Committee under the leadership of Education Minister and Pro-Chancellor Raghuji Panta. The committee has now received the applications and biodata of all 12 candidates and is preparing to shortlist three names for final recommendation.

According to the Ministry of Education, although 12 names have been formally registered, the competition primarily centers around five prominent professors:

  • Prof. Dr. Binil Aryal
  • Prof. Dr. Yogendra Bahadur Gurung
  • Prof. Dr. Khadga KC
  • Prof. Dr. Upendra Koirala
  • Prof. Dr. Dilli Ram Upreti

“The documentation review has been completed, and the selection has narrowed. The committee is now focused on recommending three names. The final decision is yet to be made,” said the source from the Ministry of Education.

The vacancy for the Vice-Chancellor position was issued after Prof. Dr. Keshar Jung Baral resigned from the post on Chaitra 15, just 13 months into his four-year tenure. Prime Minister Oli approved his resignation on Chaitra 28.

Subsequently, on Baisakh 2, PM Oli appointed Rector Prof. Dr. Khadga KC as Acting Vice-Chancellor for a maximum period of three months, in accordance with the university’s provision that allows the Rector to assume VC responsibilities temporarily in the event of a vacancy.

With the three-month term nearing its end, the recommendation committee is set to meet on Sunday evening to finalize and submit the names of three candidates for appointment.
