The Office of Registrar at Tribhuvan University has issued a statement addressing the newly released Times Higher Education 2024 rankings. According to this official statement, Tribhuvan University has been placed in the global tertiary ranking range of 1201 to 1500 for 2024.
The statement also highlights the continuity observed in the Asian tertiary education rankings, maintaining the same position as the previous year. The university administration reaffirmed its commitment to continuous improvement across various university-level indicators and explained that the deliberate maintenance of a somewhat lower measurement level is aimed at preventing confusion among stakeholders.
Notably, it is pointed out that Times Higher Education introduced a significant change in their ranking methodology for the 2024 rankings, shifting from a heavy emphasis on research citation to a more balanced evaluation system. This change had adverse effects on universities in China and India, as the number of Chinese universities included in the rankings decreased from 95 in 2023 to an expected 84 in 2024.
Additionally, the statement draws attention to potential challenges in the rankings' methodology, particularly for developing countries like Nepal. It highlights the inclusion of new indicators, such as the ratio of international professors, international staff, and international students, which may be impractical or restricted by local regulations. Despite a slight decrease in the overall university rankings for 2024, the statement emphasizes that Asian universities' levels largely remain consistent with the previous year, as confirmed by the Office of the Registrar at Tribhuvan University.
