Tribhuvan University Reverses Fee Increase Amidst Student Protests and Hunger Strikes

Tribhuvan University has taken back the BE/B. Arch fee increase decision in response to the widespread student protests, including student hunger strikes. A committee formed within seven days, including student representatives, will present a report and decide unanimously based on received feedback and suggestions to implement the fee hike.

In the current agreement to implement the aforementioned fee rollback, all programs, such as postponed BE/B.Arch entrance examinations will be carried out smoothly. In this meeting, it was agreed that no obstacles would be placed in the proper functioning of other exams under IOE.

Student organizations close to the Socialist Front had initiated hunger strikes since Bhadra 10 (August 26).

The Nepal Student Union, close to the ruling party Congress, had protested against the abrupt fee hike for engineering undergraduate studies, stating it to be unnatural.

On Wednesday, the All Nepal National Free Students Union presented symbolic opposition by encircling the office of the vice-chancellor of Tribhuvan University in response to the fee increase and to support the life of Nevisangh leader Sulabh Chapagain, who has been on a hunger strike.

As per the decision on Bhadra 25, the fee for the BE and BArch levels has been increased to NPR 7,75,720. The fee for international students pursuing studies at the same level will be NPR 15,99,720 in various subjects. The previous year, international students paid NPR 9,63,260 for the same level. Now, for Nepali students at the same level, the fee will be NPR 3,18,880.
