The Department of Education has banned the use of mobile phones in classrooms up to Plus Two level.
DoE Under-secretary Ram Raj Khakurel today said mobile phones were banned in classrooms with a view of making teaching and learning activities effective.
Regional education directorates have already notified schools through district education offices after the DoE sent a circular to this effect.
“In the wake of increasing use of mobile phones among Plus Two students in classrooms, disturbing teaching activities, the DoE decided to ban its use,” explained Khakurel.
He said guardians and teachers have welcomed the decision.
“Higher Secondary Schools’ Association of Nepal (HISSAN) was also trying to ban the use of mobile phones in classrooms, but its efforts did not pay off with students refusing to abide by the decision,” added the under-secretary.
“But we hope that our decision will be successfully implemented.”
Ruchin Khadka, Grade XII student at St Xavier’s College said they rarely use mobile phones in college. “We are not allowed to use phones in classroom.” He said many colleges charge fine for using mobile phones in classroom. Sabin Basnet, who has recently joined Liverpool International College in New Baneshwor, said, “Though my parents were not willing to give me mobile phone, I forced them to buy it because I will be an odd-man-out among colleagues without a cell phone.”
