73 Billion Rupees Spent on Abroad Study in the Past Three Years

According to the Nepal Rastra Bank, the expenditure on education for the current Fiscal Year is Rs. 22.60 billion. With Rs. 25.81 billion expenditure in the Fiscal Year 2076-77 and Rs 22.60 billion being spent in the Fiscal Year 2077-78. With the resumption of foreign travel after the travel ban was lifted, the flow of the Nepali Rupee has increased abroad. 

According to the Immigration Department, 893 people have been issued visas to study abroad till the end of the Falgun of this fiscal year. According to the statistic published on Chaitra 20, 2078, that was 154 more students compared to last year. By the end of Falgun last year, the department had issued visas to only 739 people. Similarly, last year 45 thousand 625 people obtained foreign study permits for different countries and so far this year 35 thousand 754 people have got No Objection Certificates (NOC).

The number of students getting NOCs for higher education has been increasing year by year. According to the NOC branch of the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology, the number of NOC recipients is up to 1,300 students daily. The number of NOC recipients has skyrocketed in the last three weeks. More and more students want a foreign education to increase employment opportunities for their future.

Australia has become the top destination country for studying abroad. According to the branch, so far, 23,769 people have applied for NOC with Australia as their destination this year. Similarly, there were 6,489 students for Japan, 1,383 for Canada, 1,348 for India, 611 for the UK, 440 for South Korea, and 374 from USA and Thailand have obtained foreign study permits, according to the statistics of the branch.

According to the statistics from the branch, 58 people have taken NOC for doctorate and MPhil, 3,441 for postgraduate, and 6,094 for undergraduate studies in different countries from January to March 2022. Similarly, 8,610 people have taken NOC for various subjects of diplomas and 10,947 for other subjects. Similarly, 6,604 people have taken NOC for language study in different countries.
