Scholarships Distributed to Earthquake Affected Students in Karnali Province

In an effort to support students affected by the devastating earthquake in western Nepal, Shree Jyoti Foundation, working in partnership with the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA), has distributed scholarships to vulnerable students from three districts in Karnali Province.

Sixteen students from earthquake-affected areas of Jajarkot, Rukum West, and Salyan have received scholarships from Shree Jyoti Foundation. The distribution took place in Khalanga, Jajarkot.

The scholarship, worth NPR 10,000 per student, covers school supplies such as stationery, uniforms, and bags. Students, from Grades 1 to 10, were selected from six local units: Sani Bheri, Chaurjahari, and Aathbiskot in Rukum West, and Bheri, Nalgad, and Barekot in Jajarkot. Four additional students from Bheri Municipality, who lost both parents and come from poor families, also received support.

According to Foundation Chairperson Jyotikumari Katuwal, the program began last academic year and will continue annually until the students complete Grade 10. She added that the initiative, initially funded through musical events, aims to expand across all ten districts of Karnali Province.

Local representatives praised the effort, saying it supports students’ education and encourages continuity in learning despite hardships. Principal Prem Pun of Bheri Tribeni Secondary School noted that many students had been unable to afford school supplies after the earthquake and welcomed the Foundation’s continued support.

One recipient, Ganga BK, an eighth-grade student from Nalgad Municipality, shared, “After the earthquake, I had nothing—not even clothes. Now, thanks to the scholarship, I’m able to study without worry.”

The program aims to help students in disaster-hit communities continue their education with dignity and hope.
