The Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology has clarified that a public holiday that falls during a teacher’s sick leave will be counted as part of the sick leave. The clarification came in response to a query from the Department of Personnel Records (Teacher).
The Department of Personnel Records had sent a letter requesting clear instructions on this matter. In reply, through a secretary-level decision, the ministry clarified that any public holidays falling within the approved period of a teacher’s sick leave would be included in the sick leave count.
The query had asked explicitly whether public holidays occurring during the approved sick leave of school teachers should be counted as sick leave or not. In response, the ministry affirmed via a secretary-level decision that such holidays must be counted within the sick leave.
Semanta Gautam, the information officer at the Department of Personnel Records, stated that many local governments had raised this question, prompting the ministry to request clarification.
As per the new clarification, from now on, if a public holiday falls during the sick leave period, it will be included in the sick leave calculation. For example, if a teacher applies for sick leave from Friday to Sunday, all three days, including Saturday, will be counted as sick leave.
