A cabinet meeting on June 16 decided
to appoint Prof. Dr. Parasar Prasad Koirala, as the chairperson of the
University Grant Commission (UGC) Nepal. The
position of chairperson was lying vacant from last October 4 after the
resignation of the then chairperson, Ganesh Man Gurung.
Speaking at a special programme organized at UGC to welcome him, chairperson Koriala committed that he would take initiation to hold the examinations and publish results of universities in time by maintaining the academic calendar soundly.
He asked stakeholders to support authorities to resolve the problem of education sector.
Bholanath pokharel, member-secretary of the commission, informed that the commission had submitted higher education policy to the government which put emphasis on better management, investment, regulation and quality of education. He stressed to implement the policy as soon as possible.
On the occasion, Prof. Dr. Bidhya Nath Koirala, a member of the UGC, asked the stakeholders and the government authorities to curb the haphazard affiliation being imparted to various universities and manage the system collecting the preserving the data related to higher education and distribute it to all stakeholders.
He also suggested the government to decentralize universities and to introduce new programmes to promote the quality of education.

Mahendra Singh, another member of the UGC, asked the stakeholders to
develop the commission as a more effective and powerful organization.
