Today's Cabinet meeting has appointed Prof. Dr. Anjani Kumar Jha as the Chairperson of the Medical Education Commission.
The committee had recommended the names of three individuals, among whom Jha has been appointed. He is closely associated with the Nepali Congress and has previously served as the President of the Nepal Medical Association.
The committee had recommended him as the first choice. Similarly, Dr. Praveen Mishra, former secretary of the Ministry of Health, has been suggested as the second choice, and the current Vice-Chairperson, Prof. Dr. Shreekrishna Giri, as the third choice. The tenure for the Chairperson's position in the commission is four years as per the law. The Prime Minister chairs the commission.
The commission is responsible for formulating national policies in medical education, setting standards and levels for medical education at the federal, provincial, and district levels, and determining policies and standards for unified entrance exams (common entrance examination). It also works on guiding universities, institutions, and councils as per their needs in medical education and related tasks.
