Prime Minister Sushil Koirala has filled the vacant vice-chancellor posts at two universities. Koirala appointed Prof Chiranjibi Sharma as the vice-chancellor of Pokhara University. Sharma is the chairman of the Madan Bhandari Education Foundation.
Rameshwor Upadhaya, president of the Nepal University Teachers’ Association, who is also a member of the VC Selection Committee, confirmed today that the PM appointed the vice-chancellors on the recommendation of their committee. Notably, the two newly appointed VCs are closely associated with CPN-UML.
Similarly, the prime minister appointed Mahendra Yadav, who is close to the Nepali Congress, as a member of the Service Commission at Purbanchal University.
The tenure of former VCs in seven out of nine universities expired on August 7. Earlier, the PM had appointed VCs in four universities—Tribhuvan University, Purbanchal University, Nepal Sanskrit University, and Far-Western University—on August 24 and Agriculture and Forestry University on August 26.
