The Government of Nepal has appointed Prof. Dr. Bikram Prasad Shrestha as the new Vice-Chancellor of the BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS), ending a four-month leadership vacancy. The appointment follows recommendations from the Vice-Chancellor Recommendation Committee, chaired by Health and Population Minister Pradeep Paudel, which shortlisted 24 candidates across four health science academies.
Earlier, the selection committee could not choose and recommend three candidates from the following four: Prof. Dr. Bikram Prasad Shrestha, Prof. Dr. Pralhad Karki, Prof. Dr. Rohit Prasad Yadav, and Prof. Dr. Ramesh Koirala. The committee was supposed to make its recommendation after interviews and strategic plan presentations held on Shrawan 22 and 23, 2082, at the Ministry of Health and Population in Kathmandu.
BPKIHS, established on January 18, 1993, and upgraded to an autonomous Health Sciences Academy on October 28, 1998, is located in Dharan and named after Nepal's visionary leader, Bisheshwar Prasad Koirala. It had been under the acting leadership of Prof. Dr. Sanjib Kumar Sharma, who also serves as Rector, since April 2025.
The institute offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs in medicine, recognized by medical councils in Nepal, India, and Sri Lanka, as well as various postgraduate and specialty training programs. BPKIHS is committed to developing socially responsible health professionals, advancing research, and providing tertiary healthcare services.
Prof. Dr. Bikram Prasad Shrestha
Prof. Dr. Bikram Prasad Shrestha is a renowned orthopedic surgeon and esteemed academic associated with the B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS) in Dharan, Nepal. Holding an MBBS and specializing in orthopedics (NMC No. 2001), he has served as a Professor in the Department of Orthopedics and as the former Rector and Head of the Department at BPKIHS.
Dr. Shrestha is recognized for his expertise in musculoskeletal disorders, contributing to educational initiatives through lectures on conditions like cervical spondylosis and osteoarthritis of the knee and hip.
