Private medical colleges shall provide a minimum monthly stipend of Rs 25,000 to the resident doctors pursuing postgraduate studies on a fee-paying basis.
The Medical Education Commission's Co-chairperson and Minister for Health and Population, Pradeep Poudel, along with the Minister of Education, Bidya Bhattarai, have made the decision that resident doctors should be provided with a minimum stipend with a further increment in the next consecutive years.
As per the decision, private medical colleges shall provide the minimum stipend of Rs 25,000 in the first year, Rs 30,000 in the second year, and Rs 35,000 in the third year. The decision was made after consulting with the concerned stakeholders and will be implemented in the upcoming academic year 2081/82.
A government hospital resident earns an average of Rs48,000 monthly. However, those working in private medical colleges are earning even less than Rs 20,000. With this decision, the resident doctors who had been demanding a monthly stipend of Rs 48,000, like government medical colleges, finally met their demands.
According to the decision, resident doctors who wish to pursue free postgraduate studies in private colleges can study with a commitment to working in the same college for two years after completing their studies. Those who enroll under this two-year commitment will also receive a monthly stipend of 48,000 rupees, similar to government medical colleges. The duo minister has signed an agreement to make the necessary legal arrangements for this.
Similarly, it has also been decided that private medical colleges must provide resident doctors with decent facilities per the prevailing labor laws of the university and medical council.
