Pokhara University is set to introduce Mechanical Engineering at the undergraduate level for the first time, starting from this academic session. According to Associate Professor Buddhi Raj Joshi, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology, the university has finalized the curriculum and opened admissions for the program.

Dean Joshi shared that the program aligns with the university’s plan to expand courses equipped with modern technologies in response to evolving needs.

The program aims to provide Nepali students with access to high-quality mechanical engineering education within the country. Admission Committee Coordinator Associate Professor Suresh Baral stated that although the university previously offered all major engineering disciplines, it lacked a dedicated Mechanical Engineering program. With the rising demand for mechanical engineers in hydropower, energy, design, automation, manufacturing, and industrial sectors, the university has taken steps to address this gap.

The curriculum is designed not only to cover traditional areas but also to include modern fields such as automation and robotics, Industry 4.0, and machine learning. Students will gain practical skills through project-based learning, hands-on training, and direct engagement with national and local industries.

The program’s goal is to produce competent professionals who can contribute to Nepal’s infrastructure and technological development.

According to Assistant Professor Rishabh Khanal, the four-year program is spread over eight semesters with a total of 130 credit hours. The tuition fee has been set at NPR 587,200. In the initial semesters, students will study core subjects such as engineering drawing, thermodynamics, mechanics, and workshop technology, while advanced courses in robotics, automotive technology, energy and environment, and design will be offered in later years. The curriculum also includes three elective courses, a minor project, a major project in two phases, and a compulsory 12-week internship.

Graduates will be equipped for careers in hydropower, manufacturing, infrastructure development, and renewable energy sectors within Nepal, as well as in international fields such as automotive, aerospace, robotics, and smart manufacturing.

Pokhara University has already opened online applications for the program. The application deadline is Bhadra 12, and the entrance examination will be held on Bhadra 13. Classes will be conducted at the university’s central campus, with a total intake capacity of 48 students, including nine scholarships for economically disadvantaged and meritorious candidates.
