The Medical Education Commission (MEC) of Nepal has embarked on the official recognition process with the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME). This progressive move, as outlined in the Medical Education Policy 2023, underlines Nepal's commitment to elevating the global standing of its medical education institutions.
On October 8, 2023, the MEC initiated the recognition process. The initial phase, as stipulated in the policy framework, has recieved approval, marking the initiation of the official recognition procedure. The meticulous process involves a comprehensive evaluation by the WFME, including a field visit and assessment of Nepali medical institutes against internationally recognized standards.
Prof. Dr. Dilip Sharma, Director of MEC, shared that the successful completion of the initial process signifies the commencement of the official recognition procedure. The WFME Recognition Programme, mirroring the principles of a medical school accreditation system, incorporates a thorough examination of documentation, policies, and procedures. An impartial decision by an independent committee, guided by predefined criteria, will follow the site visit.
This strategic move towards WFME recognition holds profound implications for Nepali medical graduates. If granted, this recognition not only positions Nepali medical schools and faculties on the global stage but also opens avenues for Nepalese medical graduates to pursue postgraduate training and practice in esteemed countries such as the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
The MEC's commitment to becoming a member of WFME, as articulated in the Medical Education Policy 2023, underscores Nepal's much needed step in aligning its medical education standards with global benchmarks.
