Minister of Education, Science, and Technology, Sumana Shrestha, has announced the requirement for teachers to relinquish their membership in political parties. In an event organized today within 30 days of her becoming minister, she prioritized this issue.
The Ministry has publicly invited parties to resign and has informed about providing information regarding teachers who are members of the party. However, during the event, no information was provided about teachers affiliated with the party's fraternal organization. There is a prevailing belief among experts that decisions regarding the fraternal organization of teachers associated with each party are solely subject to debate.
"We are inviting politically affiliated teachers to resign from party membership to make education a politically neutral zone," Minister Shrestha stated. "We are publicly inviting active teachers to participate in the party, and clarity has been provided on the procedure for action."
Similarly, provisions have been made in the Education Act of 2028 and the Political Parties Act of 2073, where teachers cannot become members of political parties. Similarly, the Supreme Court of Patan had ordered the Ministry of Education to take action against teachers affiliated with political parties on Mangsir 19, 2078. Despite various reasons, it has been stated that teachers taking membership in political parties will face action.
Minister Shrestha had signed the decision to make education a politically neutral zone through legal management based on the leadership of knowledgeable and expert personalities from universities.
Preparation is underway for the concept paper. Similarly, a working group has been formed under the leadership of the Under Secretary of the Higher Education Department of the Ministry to study the relevant law amendments. Based on the reports provided by the working group, the process of disciplinary action will move forward.
