Kathmandu Metropolitan City Reveals 342 Schools Failing to Provide Scholarships

Kathmandu Metropolitan City has taken a bold step by exposing the names of 342 schools that have failed to fulfill their duty of providing scholarships to students up to grade 10. This move comes as a revelation, shedding light on the disappointing reality within the city's educational landscape. With a total of 504 institutional schools under its operation, it is disheartening to discover that a significant number of these schools, including those governed by esteemed organizations like PABSON, National PABSON, and HISSAN executives, have neglected their responsibility to support the education of deserving students.

As stated by Sitaram Koirala, the Chief of the Department of Education at Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC), it has been unequivocally declared by Mayor Balendra Shah that schools failing to provide scholarships will face closure. The directive to shut down such schools has been explicitly communicated, leaving no room for ambiguity. The KMC is resolute in its decision to take action against schools that have neglected their obligation to offer scholarships within the specified timeframe.

The KMC issued a circular on April 24, requesting the schools to provide scholarship details within Jestha 15. KMC had warned the schools that if they do not submit scholarship details by Jestha 28, permission or approval given to the schools to provide scholarships will be canceled.

Among the schools that have been made public are Alok Vidhyashram, Grammar School, Pathshala Nepal Foundation, Gyan Kunj English Boarding School, Sanskriti School, Mount Glory English Boarding School, Sankriti School, Bhees Niketan Secondary School, Samata Niketan School, Kathmandu NIST School, Apex Life School, and others.

Similarly, Kasthamandap School, Pheeraghant Public School, Kathmandu Model School, Kathmandu Columbus School, Siphal Academy, Laligurans Secondary School, Kyanbhas International School, Meridian School, Kanjirowa National School, The New Summit School, Cambridge English Boarding School, and others are also included.

The Metropolitan Education Fund will implement the rule to provide scholarships to 5% of the students in the respective schools from the upcoming academic year and deposit 5% of the scholarship amount in the Metropolitan Education Fund. The Chief of the Education Department, Koirala, stated that the procedure could not be implemented because there was no provision. He mentioned that arrangements would be made to deposit the funds in the fund from the following year.

He also mentioned that scholarships would be provided based on the entrance examination for grade 11. "Each school will have a quota. For that, applications will be invited from the students. The municipality will conduct the entrance examination. We will recommend those who pass the exam. The school will provide scholarships to those students by enrolling them," he said.
