Kathmandu Metropolitan City Makes Initiative to Rename Institutional Schools in Nepali

The Kathmandu Metropolitan City has initiated a process to rename institutional schools within its jurisdiction in alignment with Nepali solidarity. The metropolitan recently announced that it has reached out to 203 institutional schools regarding the name change.

Saraswati Pokharel, Acting Head of the Department of Education within the metropolis, disclosed that while some schools have expressed satisfaction with their current names, others have suggested alternative names. The move comes after the municipality issued a public notice on Chaitra 21, urging institutional schools with foreign names to adopt names that resonate with Nepali solidarity.

The decision to prompt these changes aligns with Rule 154 (1) of the Education Regulations, 2059, and Rule 70 of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City School Education Management Regulations, 2074, which advocate for names reflecting Nepali solidarity.

Despite initially granting a week's grace period for compliance, Pokharel clarified that schools will be allowed to request name changes up to 35 days after the notice's publication, considering the ongoing influx of requests. Currently, there are over 500 private schools operating within the metropolis.

Furthermore, the Kathmandu Metropolitan City has cautioned that schools persisting in retaining foreign names beyond the specified timeframe will face legal consequences.
