Kathmandu Metropolitan City ( KMC ) Launches Dengue Awareness Drive in Schools Across Kathmandu

Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has initiated a dengue awareness campaign targeting students of community schools, aiming to curb the potential spread of the mosquito-borne infection ahead of the monsoon season.

According to Rishi Prasad Bhusal, Focal Person for the Epidemic Prevention and Control Programme at KMC, the Health Department has launched the campaign among Grade 8 and 9 students in 32 community schools within the metropolis. The initiative began with a session at Shivapuri Secondary School in Maharajgunj, Ward No. 3.

Bhusal stated that the campaign is designed to sensitize students about the causes, prevention, and treatment of dengue, with the goal of empowering them to spread awareness within their families and communities. The KMC plans to reach at least 3,200 students, effectively mobilizing them as "messengers" in the fight against dengue.

With the onset of monsoon, the risk of dengue outbreaks rises due to the increased presence of stagnant water, which serves as a breeding grounds for mosquitoes. In response, the KMC has prioritized early education and community engagement to mitigate the risk.

Sita Thapa, a representative of Ward No. 3, shared that further discussions and interaction programs will be held at the community level to reinforce awareness. She also noted that a "Search Larvae and Destroy" campaign will be implemented in the next phase to eliminate mosquito breeding sites.

The Health Department has urged residents to remain vigilant, especially as recent rains may have created favorable conditions for mosquito larvae in water-holding containers and areas.

The KMC continues to emphasize proactive measures and community involvement as key components in controlling the spread of dengue within the city.
