The Executive Council of Kathmandu University has appointed Deans for the School of Law and the School of Arts. Dr. Shiva Kumar Giri has been appointed as the Dean of the School of Law, while Dr. Uddhab Pyakurel has been appointed as the Dean of the School of Arts.
Dr. Uddhab Pyakurel, a renowned scholar and commentator in political sociology, holds a Ph.D. from the Centre for the Study of Social Systems at the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, India. He has conducted extensive research and analysis on issues such as social justice, inclusion, state restructuring, conflict resolution, democracy, elections, and India–Nepal relations. Dr. Pyakurel has been teaching at Kathmandu University for a long time.
Previously, he also served as the spokesperson of the university and as the Acting Director of the Office of International Relations and Cooperation under the Vice-Chancellor's Office. He has been actively engaged in topics such as political sociology, social inclusion, the condition of the Dalit community, and armed conflict.
Similarly, Dr. Shiva Kumar Giri, appointed as the Dean of the School of Law, is a distinguished academic with significant experience in Nepal’s legal sector. He served in Nepal's Ministry of Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs for over three decades. Rising from the position of Section Officer to Under Secretary, he made notable contributions in areas including international law, treaties, and the Department of Human Rights.
From 2013 to 2016, Dr. Giri worked as an Associate Professor in Turkey. Before that, he earned a Ph.D. in Law from the University of Toronto, Canada, a Master’s degree with distinction in International Economic Law from the University of Warwick, United Kingdom, and Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Public Administration and Law from Tribhuvan University, Nepal.
