The Kathmandu Metropolitan City has initiated a self-volunteer management program, as stated by Saraswati Pokharel, Chief of the Metropolitan Education Department. The program aims to cultivate clean, green, and aesthetically pleasing environments within these schools while also motivating students towards academic pursuits. From a pool of applicants gathered through public notices, 145 volunteers have been handpicked for deployment across community schools. Among these volunteers, 45 are dedicated to the Youth and Child (Asset) Program, while 100 are engaged in the Environment and Child (Father) Program.
Pokharel further elaborated that self-volunteers have commenced operations in 89 community schools throughout the metropolitan region, with a month-long tenure. Volunteers are expected to devote two days a week (Tuesday and Friday) to assist teachers and students in executing the 'Beautiful School' program effectively.
Furthermore, a weekly program coordination plan will be devised in collaboration with teachers every Tuesday, followed by its implementation in schools every Friday. The metropolitan municipality anticipates volunteers to actively contribute to various tasks including school maintenance, classroom organization, gardening, sanitation, waste management, and other institutional activities. Pokharel also highlighted the opportunity for volunteers to engage in the Metropolitan Golden Plan's 'Smart Tol' program.
Moreover, the metropolitan municipality has established a specific code of conduct for volunteers, emphasizing compliance to heighten awareness about children's rights, student privacy, educational motivation, and the prevention of violence against students.
