Initiative to Establish a University in Sudurpaschim Province

The Sudurpaschim provincial government in Nepal has initiated the process of establishing its university, forming a three-member task force dedicated to studying the feasibility and framework for state universities and higher education. Led by Dr. Labdev Awasthi, the committee includes Constituent Assembly member Hariram Sripaili and Ganesh Bahadur Singh, acting secretary of the Ministry of Social Development.

A significant seminar in Dhangadhi gathered experts, political leaders, and stakeholders who provided valuable opinions and suggestions. Minister of Social Development, Saund, emphasized the unique role of different government levels in education, stressing the need for provincial involvement in higher education.

Chief Minister Kamal Bahadur Shah highlighted the importance of tailoring technical education to the province's geographical context and modern requirements. The task force is set to submit its report within one and a half months, laying the groundwork for policy development in the next fiscal year.

While political parties and local representatives welcomed the idea, they cautioned against a nominal establishment and raised questions about the discontinuation of a previous task force's report. Emphasizing the need for cooperation among all government levels and the private sector, the initiative aims to ensure sustainability and community support.

The task force's responsibilities include advising on university establishment, location, land acquisition, and other managerial aspects. The Sudurpaschim provincial government's push to establish a technical university represents a strategic step toward decentralizing higher education in Nepal. By involving a diverse range of stakeholders and addressing local needs, the initiative aims to create an educational institution that aligns with the province's unique characteristics. The commitment to consider both new and previous expert insights reflects a comprehensive approach to policymaking in the education sector.
