Hult Prize at Kathmandu University, in collaboration with Chakraviu Nepal, has successfully completed the "From Jeans to Dreams" upcycling project. The initiative aimed to repurpose old jeans and provide essential items to those in need. Chakraviu Nepal will upcycle the 311 jeans collected from different schools under the university into 115 school bags, to be donated to underprivileged children in Malta village, Southern Lalitpur.
The project began with a widespread collection drive across Kathmandu University's various schools, encouraging students and faculty members to contribute old jeans. The response exceeded expectations, turning collection boxes into symbols of empathy and community spirit.
Aligning with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the initiative addresses SDG 1 (No Poverty) by repurposing jeans for underprivileged children, SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) by promoting water-saving practices, and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) by advocating sustainable approaches.
The success of the project led to the acknowledgment and rewarding of contributing departments and individuals. Top contributors, including Navin Yadav, Bishmita Basnet, and Pankaj Shrestha, were recognized for their significant contributions.
The donated jeans will undergo upcycling by "Nhu Design" in collaboration with Chakraviu Nepal, showcasing the transformation of discarded materials into valuable school bags. The final product represents collective efforts to make a positive impact on the lives of the less fortunate in Malta village, symbolizing hope and compassion.
