From now on, National Education Day will be celebrated on Ashoj 2 every year. This decision was made in today's cabinet meeting. The Education Day, which had been celebrated since the year 2031, was initially observed on the 12th of Falgun. After the mass movement of 062/063, it was decided to celebrate it on September 8, coinciding with International Literacy Day.
The Minister of Education Science and Technology, Ashok Rai, provided information that the government has decided to observe the National Education Day on the 2nd of Ashoj starting from this year. He stated, "The day of Ashoj 2 is when the law regarding compulsory and free education for all children in Nepal was passed. Therefore, it is a day that should be understood and celebrated by all citizens with pride. Keeping the importance of that day in mind, we have decided to celebrate National Education Day on Ashoj 2."
Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Rekha Sharma, provided this information about the decision.
The National Education Day is observed to commemorate the day when the Compulsory and Free Education Act was enacted in the year 2075 (2018 AD).
However, despite the enactment of the act, its effective implementation has not yet been achieved. The provision for compulsory and free education as outlined in the act has not been fully realized.
Three years ago, the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology decided to celebrate International Literacy Day as National Education Day, considering it more appropriate. But it was decided to choose a new date to commemorate that day. However, despite presenting various date proposals, no decision was reached in the cabinet meeting regarding the new date.
