Five Community Schools In Kavre Achieve 'Three-Star' Designation

Five community schools of Chaurideurali Rural Municipality of Kavrepalanchok have been recognized as 'Three Star' schools that have met the ten indicators of drinking water, sanitation, and environmental hygiene standards. Those schools that fulfill the indicators under the 'Bhabishya ko Lagi Aadhaar' project run in 33 community schools of the rural municipality have been declared 'Three Star'.

The school known as "Three Star" is of secondary level. Among those schools are Araniko Secondary School and Jagriti Secondary School located in Ward No. 5 of the rural municipality, Buddha Himalaya Secondary School in Ward No. 3, Srijanashil Janata Secondary School in Ward No. 5, Prabha Secondary School in Ward No. 6. Organizations named WaterAid and Civic Forum helped to make these schools three stars.

All five schools have completed the 10 standards of drinking water, sanitation and hygiene, clean drinking water, orderly toilets, a clean and green environment, food hygiene, health hygiene facilities, female-menstrual hygiene management facilities, institutional arrangements and sustainability, disaster risk management, monitoring, and accountability. After completing these 10 indicators, three stars were announced, said Basanta Kunwar, the chief executive officer of the forum. According to him, it is necessary to improve the health status of students by developing and promoting drinking water and sanitation facilities and a clean environment in all schools to improve learning achievement and educational quality.

In the Constitution of Nepal, Article 35 of the Fundamental Rights Clause 4 ensures that every citizen has the right to access to clean drinking water and sanitation, and under Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) No. 4 and 6, all schools should have safe and orderly drinking water, sanitation and hygiene.

Similarly, the School Area Development Plan (2073-2080) has also mentioned the need for clean drinking water management, sanitation facilities and a clean environment in schools as important aspects under the health and nutrition 'element' for quality education.
