Dr. Bishnu Raj Tiwari has been appointed as the Vice Chancellor of Pokhara University on Friday.
Prime Minister Sushil Koirala, exercising his right as mentioned in the University Act, appointed Tiwari as the VC of the university until further notice. The post was lying vacant after 23 officials, including Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Khagendra Prasad Bhattarai, were suspended by Commission of Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) on charge of embezzling university funds.
The provision in University Act states that the prime minister, in his capacity as the university chancellor, can appoint a senior professor of the university as the VC for three months after recommendation from the co-chancellor (Education Minister). The provision also states that the vice chancellor can appoint office bearers for three months following his appointment.
Following his appointment, Tiwari said that he would resume all the academic and administrative works affected after the CIAA arrest of sitting and former staff. Dr. Tiwari has done PhD in Microbiology.
Account and technical sections of the university had been closed while the process of providing scholarship and result publications were also affected after CIAA arrest.
CIAA has accused university officials of embezzling the university funds while providing college affiliation, misusing the funds in the name of transportation despite getting vehicle facility and misusing budget allocated for infrastructure development.
