Dr. Poojan Kr. Rokaya has been appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of Karnali Academy of Health Sciences (KAHS). The appointment was announced today after selection was done by Prime Minister and Chancellor KP Sharma Oli, following the recommendation of a committee chaired by Health and Population Minister Pradip Paudel.

Dr. Poojan Kr. Rokaya, a distinguished medical professional and academic, was selected from a pool of 15 applicants who applied for the prestigious position, as part of a competitive process initiated by the Ministry of Health and Population on June 18, 2025. The recommendation committee, which included Health Secretary Dr Bikash Devkota and National Planning Commission member Prof. Dr. Ram Padarath Bichha, shortlisted candidates based on their qualifications, experience, and strategic vision for the academy.

After the presentation and interview, the selection committee has nominated three candidates: Prof. Dr. Pujan Kumar Rokaya, Prof. Dr. Dabal Bahadur Dhami, and Prof. Dr. Suryaman Myangyango.

The position of Vice-Chancellor became vacant after the term of the previous acting Vice-Chancellor, Associate Professor Dr. Mangal Rawal, who had been managing the institution since April 5, 2021.  After the end of Dr. Mangal Rawal’s tenure, Dr. Dabal Bahadur Dhami, Rector of KAHS was appointed as Acting Vice Chancellor of the institution. 

About Dr. Poojan Kumar Rokaya 

Dr. Poojan Kumar Rokaya is a distinguished orthopedic and trauma surgeon serving as an Associate Professor and Director at the Karnali Academy of Health Sciences (KAHS) in Jumla, Nepal. With an MBBS and specialization in Orthopedics, he heads the Department of Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery at KAHS, a tertiary care center in the remote Karnali region. 

Dr. Rokaya is actively involved in clinical practice, research, and community health initiatives, notably leading a specialized health camp in Sinja Rural Municipality in 2024 to provide free orthopedic, gynecological, and other medical services to underserved populations. His research contributions include studies on pediatric elbow dislocations, peritrochanteric femur fractures, and appendicitis in high-altitude regions. As a key member of the KAHS Senate and Hospital Management, Dr. Rokaya had played a pivotal role in advancing medical education and healthcare delivery in rural Nepal.
