Dean of the Institute of Medicine (IoM) Dr Prakash Sayami resigned today after failing to appoint other officials on merit basis. The Tribhuvan University Executive Council, which appointed Sayami as the dean of IoM on August 18 in the wake of pressure from doctors, teachers, students and employees of the IoM, is yet to approve his resignation.

Dr Govinda KC had staged a hunger strike for six days against political intervention and for merit-based appointments in the IoM, seeking action against officials found guilty of irregularities at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital. KC ended the strike with the appointment of new dean, who had pledged to make merit-based appointments.

The post of campus chief and deputy dean has been lying vacant for one and a half years, while the posts of two deputy deans have been vacant for one year and six months, respectively. Associate Professor Dr Dinesh Bastola said Dr Sayami resigned on moral grounds.

Though Dr Sayami had suggested names for appointment in vacant posts three months ago, TU vice-chancellor and registrar did not accept his proposal as they were for political appointments, said Bastola. He said there are more than 100 problems, including the publication of exam results, preparations for entrance exams. Dr Arun Sayami, former dean of IoM, said Sayami will submit his resignation tomorrow. It is learnt that the office of the Vice Chancellor has not received his resignation till date.
