Controversy Surrounds Fee Hikes for Diploma Programs: CTEVT Committee to Review Decision

The Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT) has established a committee of three members to reassess the recent fee hikes for PCL Nursing, Diploma in Pharmacy, and PCL in General Medicine. The committee was formed under the leadership of Director Ramhari Devkota.

Previously, CTEVT had adjusted the fee structure for General Medicine, Diploma in Pharmacy, and Nursing based on a ministerial decision made on Poush 6, 2079. Various suggestions regarding fee adjustments were made at different times.

CTEVT made the fee adjustments decision public on Ashadh 29. The diploma in pharmacy fee has been increased by 25%, resulting in a cost of NPR 308,660. For PCL in General Medicine, the fee has been increased by 30%, amounting to NPR 523,820; for PCL in Nursing, there is a 31% increase, making the fee NPR 624,230.

Student organizations and concerned individuals like Dr. Govind KC have opposed the decision. Medical Education Commission, as the regulatory body for medical education, has fixed the fee of 3 years Bachelor in Nursing science program to NPR 518,000; with the recent hike in price, the cost to study PCL Nursing is more expensive than studying Bachelor in Nursing Science (BNS) by more than NPR 106,000.

Shrikrishna Giri, the Commission's Vice Chairman, mentions that a review should be conducted as the decision regarding the fee hike by CTEVT is not practical.
