In a recent interaction program titled “Comprehensive Sexuality Education,” experts emphasized the need for structured sexual education to guide adolescents in the right direction. The event was organized by the Beyond Beijing Committee on Friday.
Dr. Laxmi Tamang, Vice-Chairperson of the committee, highlighted that although health and physical education are compulsory in Grades 6, 7, and 8, students often hesitate to learn, and teachers face challenges in delivering lessons due to societal taboos surrounding the topic.
She further pointed out that in Grades 9 and 10, health education is offered as an elective subject, limiting access for all students. Dr. Tamang strongly advocated for making health education mandatory up to the secondary level.
“Providing sexuality education to adolescents can make them more aware and prevent them from falling into harmful behaviors and sexually transmitted diseases,” she said. Dr. Tamang also urged the media to take the lead in running awareness campaigns on such critical issues.
