The Banaras Hindu University (BHU) will confer an honorary Doctorate of Letters (D Litt) degree on President Ram Baran Yadav in the last week of December.
An official invitation to this effect has been sent to the President’s Office, while it has been forwarded to the Cabinet, highly-placed government sources said on Wednesday. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has already given a go-ahead to the Yadav’s India visit, while the President’s Office now awaits a final call from the Cabinet, the sources said.
The degree will be conferred on Yadav by Indian President Pranab Mukherjee on December 25 at a function in Varanasi being organised to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahamana Malaviya, the BHU’s founder.
Sources said Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and senior Indian politicians and academicians will be attending the function.
This will be the President’s third visit to India and the fifth international sojourn after he assumed office in July 2008.
