The National Eligibility Test (NET) is conducted under the University Grants Commission to assess the qualifications of individuals who wish to pursue a teaching career in universities and higher education institutions in Nepal.
This test has been introduced to enhance the academic quality of higher education by ensuring that only competent and qualified individuals enter the teaching profession.
It applies to:
- Individuals aspiring to become teachers in higher education
- Existing teaching personnel (except those already permanently appointed through official procedures)
Passing the NET is a mandatory requirement before engaging in teaching at the university level.
Examination Frequency and Notification
- The NET is conducted once every year.

Examination Structure
The NET consists of two papers, both based on Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs).
Paper I: Aptitude Test
- Full Marks: 50
- Pass Marks: 25
- Duration: 1 hour
Question Distribution:
- 30 questions × 1 mark = 30
- 10 questions × 2 marks = 20

- Research aptitude and publication ethics

- Nepal’s history, geography, culture, and natural resources
- Higher education system, policies, constitutional and legal provisions
Paper II: Subject-Specific Test

- Pass Marks: 50
- Duration: 2 hours
Question Distribution:
- 60 questions × 1 mark = 60
- 20 questions × 2 marks = 40
Focus Area:
- In-depth knowledge of the candidate’s subject

11. Reattempt Opportunity
- Candidates are allowed to:
