National Eligibility Test: University Grant Commission

The National Eligibility Test (NET) is conducted under the University Grants Commission to assess the qualifications of individuals who wish to pursue a teaching career in universities and higher education institutions in Nepal.

This test has been introduced to enhance the academic quality of higher education by ensuring that only competent and qualified individuals enter the teaching profession.

It applies to:

  • Individuals aspiring to become teachers in higher education
  • Existing teaching personnel (except those already permanently appointed through official procedures)

Passing the NET is a mandatory requirement before engaging in teaching at the university level.

Examination Frequency and Notification

  • The NET is conducted once every year.
  • The application notice provides at least:
    • 21 days for submission
  • Only candidates who:
    • Apply within the deadline
    • Follow the prescribed procedure are eligible to appear in the exam.

Examination Structure

The NET consists of two papers, both based on Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs).

Paper I: Aptitude Test

  • Full Marks: 50
  • Pass Marks: 25
  • Duration: 1 hour

Question Distribution:

  • 30 questions × 1 mark = 30
  • 10 questions × 2 marks = 20

  • Teaching aptitude
  • Communication skills
  • Research aptitude and publication ethics
  • Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
  • Nepal’s history, geography, culture, and natural resources
  • Higher education system, policies, constitutional and legal provisions

Paper II: Subject-Specific Test

  • Full Marks: 100
  • Pass Marks: 50
  • Duration: 2 hours

Question Distribution:

  • 60 questions × 1 mark = 60
  • 20 questions × 2 marks = 40

Focus Area:

  • In-depth knowledge of the candidate’s subject

Key Examination Rules

  • Paper I is conducted faculty-wise
  • Paper II is conducted subject-wise
  • Negative marking:
    • 25% marks deducted for each incorrect answer
  • Candidates must:
    • Pass both papers separately
  • Final score:
    • Based on the combined marks of both papers

Medium of Examination

  • Paper I:
    • Conducted in English, Nepali, or both
  • Paper II:
    • Language subjects:
      • Conducted in the respective language
    • Other subjects:
      • Conducted in English

Result Publication

  • Results are published within:
    • 3 months after the examination
  • Results are made available through:
    • Official notice board
    • Official website

Grievance Handling:

  • Candidates can submit claims within:
    • 15 days of result publication
  • Claims are reviewed by subject experts before a final decision is made.

10. Certification

  • Successful candidates receive a National Eligibility Test Certificate

Validity:

  • The certificate is valid for:
    • 5 years

Exception:

  • The validity does not apply to candidates already permanently appointed through official procedures.

  • Faculty and subject
  • Marks obtained

11. Reattempt Opportunity

  • Candidates are allowed to:
    • Reappear in future NET exams to improve their scores
  • There is no restriction on the number of attempts.

Eligibility

To appear in the NET, candidates must:

  • Be a Nepali citizen
  • Hold a Master’s degree in the relevant subject with:
    • Minimum 50% marks or CGPA 2.7
  • Not have been convicted of offenses involving moral turpitude
  • Not have been dismissed from employment in a way that disqualifies future service
  • Not be disqualified under any prevailing laws

Additional requirement:

  • Candidates with foreign degrees must provide:
    • Equivalency certification
