The Central Department of Botany is committed to advancing Ph.D. research alongside its regular teaching and Master's degree programs.
Since the inception of the Ph.D. program, the department has conferred 43 Ph.D. degrees with specializations in ecology, plant systematics, pathology, cytology, and genetics. Presently, 23 students are actively engaged in their research. Graduates have successfully secured lectureships and research positions at various institutions, while new graduates have taken up roles in diverse organizations. Many Ph.D. scholars have conducted their research at renowned laboratories and herbaria worldwide.
The Ph.D. research laboratory, established with funding from the University Grant Commission (UGC) Nepal, provides state-of-the-art facilities for advanced research.
Admission Criteria
Applications for Ph.D. enrollment are announced by the Dean’s office of the Institute of Science and Technology. The program is research-based with some coursework, supervised by esteemed departmental faculty members. Co-supervisors from other institutions in Nepal or abroad may also be involved if necessary. The Central Department Research Committee (CDRC) oversees all activities related to the Ph.D. program.
Curricular Structure
The Ph.D. program in Botany encompasses a broad spectrum of topics, including classical taxonomy, evolutionary developmental genetics, phylogenetics, floristics, vegetation ecology, microbial ecology, invasion ecology, agroforestry, ecophysiology, ethnobotany, ethnoecology, resource conservation, tissue culture, cytogenetics, mycology, and phytochemistry.
