The Bachelor in Midwifery Sciences (BMS) program offered by PAHS, School of Nursing and Midwifery (SoNM) is designed to address the pressing need for qualified midwives in Nepal. Patan Academy of Health Sciences (PAHS) commenced Bachelors in Midwifery Science program in  2022 AD.

With high rates of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality, the National Health Policy 2071 has emphasized the importance of maternal and child health promotion and reducing these health risks. To achieve these goals, the policy recognizes the necessity of producing specialized healthcare professionals, including midwives, who can provide comprehensive and evidence-based care to women, families, and communities.

The BMS program is a three-year undergraduate program that equips graduates with the skills and knowledge to practice as competent midwives. The curriculum focuses on preparing midwives who can deliver high-quality healthcare services in line with safe sexual and reproductive health practices. Graduates of the program are trained to provide care at all levels of healthcare delivery within the country.

Midwives play a crucial role in achieving the sustainable development goals related to reducing maternal and neonatal mortality rates. They are also instrumental in meeting the holistic needs of women by addressing their psychological, emotional, physical, social, and spiritual well-being throughout pregnancy, childbirth, and beyond. Additionally, midwives have a vital role in educating women, their families, and the community, contributing to an overall improvement in the quality of women's lives.

Midwives practice by advocating for women and working in partnership with them and their families to ensure safe and satisfying childbirth experiences. They possess the knowledge to identify potential complications in both mother and baby, seek appropriate medical assistance, and implement emergency measures when necessary. Midwives also collaborate with other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive care and make referrals as needed. PAHS School of Nursing and Midwifery acknowledges the importance of midwifery care and has developed the three-year BMS program to train individuals who can provide respectful maternity care with compassion and empathy.

Upon completion of the program, graduates are recognized as midwives who can practice in various settings, including homes, communities, hospitals, and other maternity services. They are responsible and accountable for the care of individuals who require their assistance. With a full education, licensure, and integration into interdisciplinary teams, midwives can offer essential sexual and reproductive health services.

The aim of the BMS program is to produce competent professional midwives who can work independently as part of a healthcare team. These midwives monitor the physical, social, psychological, emotional, and spiritual well-being of mothers throughout the childbearing cycle. They provide individualized education, counseling, and prenatal care to expectant mothers, assist during labor and safe delivery, offer postpartum support, identify potential complications, and refer women for further management when necessary. The program emphasizes evidence-based practice and seeks to recognize, promote, and advocate for the normal physiological and developmental processes of menarche, pregnancy, birth, and menopause.

Overall, the Bachelor in Midwifery Sciences program at PAHS, School of Nursing and Midwifery is dedicated to producing competent midwives who can contribute significantly to improving maternal and child health outcomes in Nepal. By providing comprehensive care and advocating for women's well-being, these midwives play a crucial role in achieving safe and satisfying childbirth experiences and enhancing the overall quality of life for women in the country.
