Bachelor of Craft and Design is a four-year degree program which is focused in experiential learning approach where students "learn by doing" and reflect on the experience. Students who are engaged in experiential learning can evaluate and reflect on their own practices. Students are given the chance to take the initiative and participate intellectually, creatively, emotionally, socially or physically. Bachelor of Craft and Design is offered by School of Arts and School of Engineering where the degree provides the platform of practical, historical and philosophical understanding in the field of craft and design. Innovative learning pedagogies helps the students to build a competency for national and international job market with quality education. Students will learn about the history of craft and design and current trends and techniques. Students will be engaged with various materials and processes throughout the course, including metal, wood, jeweler, stone, ceramics, natural fibers, animal products, textiles, to digital fabrication. This exposure will provide them with a diversified skill set and the capacity to experiment with many materials, which may be applied to various craft and design disciplines such as furniture design, fashion design, product design, interior design and more. They will also gain hands-on experience through independent projects and peer learning seminars, allowing them to excel in their craft practice and develop their design idioms and approaches.
To strengthen their knowledge, the students will also enroll in elective courses to develop a specialized and interdisciplinary skill sets and acquire a deeper understanding of their respective areas of interest.

Aims

Teaching and Learning Strategies
Bachelor of Craft and Design is designed an experiential-learning program to be continuously supported and monitored by master artisans, designers, engineers, artists, cultural experts, craft leaders, social scientists and professionals of the fields. Every individual subject will be instructed and managed by experts of the concerned areas. The independent practices are planned as intensive studio works at selected craft-workshops either mentored by experts or as on-the-job trainings. The frequent visits to different related experts, organizations and institutions will be a part of regular academic calendar. This course is intended to participatory class tutorials, continuous studio practices, home assignments, research and writings and self-motivated or guided projects.
The main teaching strategies are –
- Studio-based supervised sessions, demonstrations and presentations covering different aspects of craft and design under guidance of experts.
- Practical sessions as introductory sessions to art, design and engineering workshops.
- Theory tutorials with interactive and participatory sessions using multimedia projection, interdisciplinary teaching methodology and as supplementary modules to the main practical components.
- Competitive and innovative projects as self-motivated or tutored assignments.
- Self-tailored electives and craft practices as experiential learning.
- Regular visit to experts, organizations, internship and apprenticeship, research projects, community-based projects and developing liaison with professionals for the future purposes.
Language of Instruction
All lectures and written work will be in English and Nepali. Examinations will be in English as well as in Nepali.
Eligibility
Higher Secondary (+2), or equivalent qualification in any discipline with minimum 40% aggregate.

Fees
The total fee for Nepali students enrolled in Bachelor in Craft and Design program for the academic year 2079/80 (2022 Batch) is NPR. 470,000.
The fee structure for international students seeking admission to the Bachelor of Craft and Design program at Kathmandu University (KU) is as follows:
- The fees for applicants from SAARC countries will be 1.5 times the amount specified for domestic students i.e. NPR.705,000
- On the other hand, international students from countries outside of SAARC will be required to pay double the fees stated for domestic students i.e. NPR 940,000

Students can enroll in elective courses as per availability.
Electives
Students shall complete 5 Electives over the period of seven semesters, i.e., First Year First Semester till Fourth Year First Semester.
The different undergraduate subjects offered across the Schools, Departments and Programs of Kathmandu University can be offered as Electives depending on the consensual agreement between the student, the concerned Bachelor of Craft and Design in-charge, and the HoD/coordinator of the Schools, Departments and Programs where the selected subjects are offered.
Out-of-University subjects (courses, projects, workshops, internship, apprenticeship, mentorship, etc.) will also be considered as Electives depending on the consensual agreement between the student, the concerned Bachelor of Craft and Design in-charge, and stakeholders/institution where the selected subjects are offered.
Apart from the first 5 Electives, students will be allowed a maximum of 9 additional Electives, for which the students shall pay additional course fees, as per the University rules but the total CGPA will only be calculated within 135 credits of core and electives course without including extra 4 additional Electives. The electives courses offered in the beginning of the semester shall be decided upon the approval of the Dean of a concerned school.
