Teachers move court against protest ban

Teachers and employees affiliated to the Nepal Educational Republic Forum and Teachers’ Union of Nepal today filed a petition at the appellate court demanding annulment of the decision to ban sit-ins at the Department of Education and the Ministry of Education.

Home Kumar Thapa, president of the NERF-aligned Nepal Institutional School Teachers’ Union, said the appellate court verdict is against trade unions’ rights and the Interim Constitution, which ensures workers’ right to stage anti-government rallies, sit-ins, bandhs and other activities against the government in a peaceful way.

In response to a teachers’ petition demanding a ban on sit-ins at government bodies, the appellate court had issued an order to teachers and school employees, telling them not to stage such sit-ins as they halt work at these bodies.

NERF and TUN today staged a sit-in in front of the 75 District Education Offices (DEO) from 10am to 4pm as part of their scheduled second phase protest programmes. They are scheduled to stage sit-ins before all DEOs tomorrow and in front of DoE and MoE on February 7 and 8, respectively.

Permanent status for temporary teachers, appointment of relief quota teachers and free school education, among others, figure in the agitator’s 47-point demand.
