Kathmandu Shikshalaya (KS) is a co-educational school located in a safe and secure area in the heart of the Kathmandu Valley, specifically at Balbhadra Marg, Mid-Baneshwor (Kathmandu Metropolitan-31). For children aged two to four years, the focus is on developing physical, social, cognitive, spiritual, and creative skills while igniting curiosity. For four to six-year-olds, the curriculum shifts toward personal and interpersonal growth, helping them handle challenging situations and become more independent. For first- and second-graders, the school provides an active learning environment featuring multisensory experiences that emphasize cognitive and behavioral strategies.

Programmes at Kathmandu Shikshalaya

Play Group (PG) – 18 months to 2.5 years

A World of Discovery Through Play

The Play Group program at Kathmandu Shikshalaya is designed to help toddlers begin exploring the world around them through sensory-rich play and nature-based activities. At this stage, children are just beginning to engage with their environment and peers, and the program provides a safe space to do so. Guided by experienced educators, children enjoy tactile experiences such as handling natural materials, engaging in water play, and observing the wonders of nature firsthand. This class encourages early social skills, language development, and motor skill growth in a nurturing, outdoor-oriented environment.

Nursery – 3+ years

Curiosity and Learning in Nature

In the Nursery class at Kathmandu Shikshalaya, children begin to build upon their early learning experiences, exploring more structured activities while continuing to immerse themselves in the natural world. At this stage, children's curiosity blossoms, and the curriculum incorporates early literacy and numeracy skills, as well as nature-based exploration. Nursery students are introduced to more purposeful nature walks, where they observe the changing seasons, plant growth, and the animals in their environment. The program is designed to foster independent learning and provide opportunities for creativity, from crafting with natural materials to exploring rhythm and movement in music and dance classes.

Pre-Primary and Primary at Kathmandu Shikshalaya

Kathmandu Shikshalaya welcomes children to the Pre-Primary and Primary School, where each child's development is nurtured emotionally, academically, physically, socially, and artistically every day. During these formative years, the school believes it is essential that children build a strong foundation in basic skills, a deep sense of self, and the ability to contribute to a group, while capitalizing on their innate curiosity about the world around them. Within a challenging curriculum, children are encouraged to take risks and allowed to make mistakes in a supportive environment, all under the care of committed teachers.

The ultimate goal of Kathmandu Shikshalaya is to instill and sustain a sense of wonder and excitement about learning in all its children. The school achieves this through a truly child-centered approach, in which teaching and learning are driven by each student's needs and interests. Led by well-qualified, Montessori-trained teachers, the classroom becomes a space for learning through active involvement rather than passive reception.

Beyond academics, the school environment is filled with motherly care from both teachers and helper didis, ensuring that every child feels safe, loved, and valued. By the time children leave the Pre-Primary and Primary sections, they transition to formal schooling with a strong academic foundation rooted in nature-based learning, full of eager anticipation for what lies ahead.

Lower Secondary and Secondary at Kathmandu Shikshalaya

Kathmandu Shikshalaya nurtures the growth of the whole child academically, socially, physically, and emotionally during what is typically the most difficult years of one's school life. During this stage of development, students encounter puberty, pre-adolescence, changes in brain chemistry, and huge spurts of physical growth and maturation. The school recognizes that this phase of tremendous growth affords children boundless opportunities for self-discovery and facilitates this growth by helping them become stronger self-advocates, doers, and thinkers in the community at large.

At Kathmandu Shikshalaya, long-term projects and research are integral elements of the curriculum. Study skills, information literacy, technology, and critical and creative thinking skills are incorporated throughout instruction. Students are exposed not only to core academic subjects such as language arts, math, science, social science, and foreign languages, but also to music, art, theater, technology, and physical education. A Learning Specialist works closely with faculty and students to integrate enrichment and reinforcement activities, provide guidance on addressing diverse learning styles, and monitor student progress. Teachers guide students in setting goals and monitoring their progress toward those goals.

Middle School at Kathmandu Shikshalaya is a time to push boundaries on all fronts and maximize student potential. Students are challenged and may struggle every now and then, but the school believes in allowing them to stumble so that the next time they will grow wings. The school encourages parents to stand back and watch them learn to fly, knowing that sometimes they will fall, but they can and will try again.
