This curriculum for "Dental Chair-side Assistant" has been developed with the purpose of preparing a technical workforce in the field of dental chair-side assistance who can gain employment within Nepal. The technical skills integrated into this curriculum have been contributed by experts with prior field experience in dental chair-side assistance. The curriculum's content is organized into modules, making it a tailor-made program for modular implementation.

Furthermore, it is a competency-based curriculum designed to produce a lower-level technical workforce in dental chair-side assistance. This workforce will be equipped with the necessary skills, knowledge, and attitudes related to dental chair-side assistance technology to meet the country's demand for such professionals, thereby contributing to Nepal's national strategy for poverty reduction.

Aims:
The primary aim of this curricular program is to produce skilled dental chair-side assistants by providing training to the nation's citizens and connecting them with employment opportunities within the country. The specific aims of this curriculum include:

  • Producing a lower-level technical workforce in the field of dental chair-side assistance.
  • Developing technical personnel capable of providing services through the application of dental chair-side assistance technology skills and knowledge.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this training program, trainees will be able to:

  • Adhere to universal precautions.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of dental clinics.
  • Manage and dispose of clinical waste.
  • Prepare dental equipment.
  • Prepare dental instruments.
  • Prepare dental materials.
  • Manipulate and mix dental materials.
  • Assist in patient management.
  • Prepare patients for procedures.
  • Assist dental hygienists or dentists.
  • Assist in the development of dental X-rays.
  • Provide pre- and post-operative instructions.
  • Perform sterilization and disinfection procedures.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on dental equipment.
  • Provide first aid services.
  • Assist in dental emergencies.
  • Communicate effectively with others.

Duration:
The total duration of this curricular program is three months (390 hours), comprising 320 hours for specific modules and 70 hours for a common module.

Entry Criteria:

Individuals who meet the following criteria will be eligible to enroll in this curricular program:

  • Minimum of Grade Ten pass or equivalent qualification.
  • Physically and mentally fit.
  • Minimum age of 18 years.
  • Successful completion of an entrance examination.
  • Preference will be given to female candidates and those from Dalit, Janjati, and conflict-affected communities.

Certificate Requirement:

The relevant training institute will award the "Dental Chair-side Assistant" certificate to individuals who successfully complete all the tasks and demonstrate the required technical knowledge specified in this curriculum.
