The Embassy of Japan announces the competition for Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarships for Nepali students for the academic year 2027 in the fields of Natural Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences for the Academic Year 2027 under the Monbukagakusho Scholarship Program as follows:

Postgraduate / Research Students

Qualifications

  1. Nepali nationals
  2. Under 35 years of age as of April 1st, 2027 (born on or after April 2nd, 1992)
  3. Have completed at least 16 years of education (18 years for doctoral course)
  4. Have secured 70% marks (CGPA 3.1) for Natural Sciences and 60% (CGPA 2.5) for Humanities and Social Sciences in average of plus 2 and above degree.

Fields of Study

Candidates should submit their applications for the discipline they specialized in during their university education or fields closely related to it.

Terms of Scholarship

From April 2027 to March 2029, a two-year duration is allocated, with the possibility of extension for master's or doctoral programs. For students opting for the October session, the term will span one and a half years.

Language

Candidates should be open to acquiring proficiency in the Japanese language, displaying a keen interest in Japan, and demonstrating enthusiasm for deepening their understanding of the country upon arrival.

Please forward the digitally completed or scanned documents outlined below to education@km.mofa.go.jp no later than May 31st 24:00 (NST), 2026. Applications received after the deadline will not be considered.

  3. Academic Transcript (Attested copies (by notary public) of mark-sheets for plus2, Bachelor (and Master, if you have enrolled in or completed))
  4. Certification of graduation or degree (Attested copies (by notary public) of certificates for Bachelor (and Master, if you have enrolled in or completed))
  5. Recommendation Letter from the president/dean or the academic advisor at the current or last university attended
  6. Abstract of thesis (Only if you have written thesis.)
  7. Certificate of Language Proficiency (Only if you have documents attesting to competency in Japanese or English.)
  8. Recommendation Letter from the present employer (Only if you are currently employed.)
  9. Photograph or digitally recorded media of your art work (Only if you apply for fine art or music)
  10. Attested copy (by notary public) of Citizenship Certificate

For those who passed the interview

You will be asked to submit the following documents:

  1. Placement Preference Application Form
  2. Medical Certificate

Terms of Scholarship

Over a span of five years (extended to seven years for medical and veterinary programs), starting from April 2027 and concluding in March 2032, which encompasses one year dedicated to preparatory education covering Japanese language and other relevant subjects.

Language

Since all classes at the university will be conducted in Japanese, it is essential that applicants are willing to acquire proficiency in the Japanese language.

  5. Certificate of enrollment (Only if you have enrolled in a university).
  6. Certificate of university enrollment qualification examination (Only if you passed the university enrollment qualification examination.)
  7. Certificate of Language Proficiency (Only if you have documents attesting to competency in Japanese or English.)
  8. Attested Copy (by Notary Public) of Nepali citizenship certificate
