The National Private and Boarding Schools’ Association Nepal (National PABSAN) has directed its member schools to adjust their academic calendars and make necessary arrangements to implement the Government of Nepal’s decision on two weekly public holidays (Saturday and Sunday) and the delayed start of the new academic session.
In response to the Cabinet’s decision announced on Chaitra 22 that aimed at reducing petroleum consumption and conserving foreign currency reserves, National PABSAN has instructed its member schools to incorporate the following arrangements in their annual calendar and planning:
- New admissions will begin from Baisakh 2, with regular teaching commencing from Baisakh 15.
- For the academic session 2083, schools must manage Dashain, Tihar, winter/summer vacations, and other breaks in such a way as to ensure a minimum of 220 teaching days.
- School hours should be managed carefully to avoid placing excessive burden on students.
- Greater use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) should be integrated into teaching-learning processes.
- All other activities, including trainings, workshops, competitions, parent days, and Teachers-Parents Meetings (PTA) should be scheduled on Saturdays or Sundays.
- School fees must be collected strictly as per Chapter 25 of the Education Act 2072 — monthly fees every month, annual fees once a year, and additional fees only for specific services provided. Admission fees should be charged only once from new students.
The association circulated the directives while expressing serious concern over the government’s decision, stating that the introduction of Saturday and Sunday as weekly holidays would add around 40 extra holidays in a year, making it challenging to complete the nationally prescribed and internationally benchmarked curriculum on time. It also highlighted that shifting the academic session start from Baisakh 1 to Baisakh 15 would further squeeze the already tight academic calendar, potentially affecting the quality of education.
Despite these concerns, National PABSAN has urged all its member schools to carry out educational activities in an organised manner while fully complying with the government’s decision and court directives.
