Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City is one of the 12 municipalities in Sunsari District of Koshi Province. As per the 2021 census, the sub-metropolitan city has a total population of 166,531, comprising 78,410 males (47.1%) and 88,121 females (52.9%), with a literacy rate of 87.42%. Spanning 192.32 square kilometers, Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City exhibits the population density of 866 people per square kilometer. Administratively, it is divided into 20 wards.
