How long does it take to prepare for JFT-Basic from zero?

I am planning to go to Japan for work and recently learned about the JFT-Basic exam.

I have no prior Japanese language knowledge. How many months does it usually take to prepare for JFT-Basic from beginner level?

What study materials, apps, or websites would you recommend?

Any advice from people who have already passed the exam would be appreciated.

From my experience, most beginners can prepare for the JFT-Basic exam within 2–4 months if they study consistently.

I would recommend focusing on:

  • Basic vocabulary
  • Listening practice
  • Daily conversation patterns
  • Reading comprehension
  • Mock tests

One resource that helped me was JFT Guru, which offers free JFT-Basic mock tests and practice questions. Practicing with exam-style questions can make a big difference.

You can try their free mock tests here:

I found the mock tests useful because they helped me get familiar with the exam format and identify areas where I needed more practice.

Good luck with your preparation and your journey to Japan!
