Journalism and Mass Communication (JMC) education began in Nepal in 1976. Ratna Rajya Laxmi College of Tribhuvan University began JMC as an optional subject for students of Proficiency Certificate Level (PCL) and introduced Bachelors in Arts in JMC in 1986.

The Masters in Arts in Journalism and Mass Communication was started in 2001; and both M.Phil and Ph. D. began in 2017. The Department has produced hundreds of journalists and still a leading Journalism and Mass Communication education.
