Young Nepalese are world beaters in Cambridge School exams

April 05, 2014

Three young Nepalese were on top of the world, beating students from across the globe to come first in 2010 Cambridge International Examinations.

The three were amongst 30 talented young Nepalis honoured for outstanding school exam results at the Outstanding Cambridge Learner's award ceremony attended by Vice-President Parmanand Jha on 31 March in Kathmandu.

The event was co-hosted by British Council, Nepal and Cambridge International Examinations to celebrate the achievements of Nepali students who performed extraordinarily well in final exams of GCE A and AS -levels. Vice President Mr Parmanada Jha, British Council Director, Dr Robert Monro and CIE Regional Manager, South Asia Mr Andrew Sortwell jointed distributed certificates to the winners.

Dr Robert Monro, British Council Director said " I would like to congratulate the Ministry of Education for their foresight in supporting the delivery of A-levels in Nepal. There is a very clear connection between Exams and educational standards. If an exam is set at a certain level and the examinations process is properly controlled, the teachers then have to be effective if students are going to pass that exam. By setting exams at an international standard we are therefore not only benefiting those who take those exams, we are helping to improve the standards of teaching in Nepal and setting a benchmark for other schools to follow. "

THE THREE WINNERS WHO CAME FIRST  FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD ARE

  • Byanjana Thapa - Language and literature in English, AS-level, June 2010, Rato Bangala School
  • Shitoshna Nepal - General Paper, AS-level,November 2010 Rato Bangala School
  • Ingroj Shrestha.- Mathematics, A-level, June 2010, Kathmandu Academy

Byanjana Thapa said "I enjoy challenges, and A-levels are very mentally challenging compared to the rote-learning of the SLC exams. In fact, I performed better in my A-level exams than I did in the SLC exams. I’ve never been particularly responsive to memorization. A-level exams demand an understanding of the subject and of concepts surrounding it. I have retained so much more of what I learned during my Alevels course than I did during my SLC course."

The Vice-President Mr Parmananda Jha , who handed out awards at the ceremony, said " I would like to congratulate all students who were able to top the world and top the Nepal. Today's student are leaders of tomorrow. I hope you will work for the development of Nepal in future.

I am sure A-level education in Nepal will flourish more and Nepalese students will achieve better results in the days to come."
