VCs want vacant varsity posts filled

Vice-chancellors (VCs) of newly established universities today said they are facing difficulties implementing their policies due to absence of rectors and registrars.

VCs of the three newly established universities — Agriculture and Forestry University (AFU), Far-Western University and Mid-Western University — have alleged that Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai was not paying attention to the varsities’ needs.

Prof Kailash Nath Pyakurel, VC at AFU, said he had already recommended names for the post of registrar but the PM has not given his approval to any of the names. He said that as per rules, rector and registrar are to be appointed by the Prime Minister, who is chancellor of all universities, on the recommendation of VCs.

“Since the universities are working without officials responsible to deal with financial and administrative matters, we are having difficulty implementing our plans and programmes,” said Pyakurel. Dr Jaya Raj Awasthi, VC at FWU, echoed Pyakurel.

Devendra Poudel, PM’s political adviser, said the discussions on this issue were on.
