KIRTIPUR: Vice chancellors of six universities today resumed their duties, a day after agitating professors inked a three-point deal with the government. Earlier, the professors aligned to UCPN-Maoist and Nepali Congress had locked seven universities demanding to annul appointment of VCs by former government led by Jhala Nath Khanal.
Then government had appointed Prof Hira Maharjan as VC for Tribhuvan University, Prof Shiva Hari Marahattha for Nepal Sanskrit University, Dr Jaya Raj Awasthi for Far Western University, Prof Kailash Nath Pyakurel for Agriculture and Forestry University, Prof Maheshwor Man Shrestha for Purbanchal University, Prof Padam Lal Devkota for Mid Western University and Prof Khagendra Bhattarai for Pokhara University on August 8. Except for Prof Devkota, who is mourning his brother’s death, all other VCs joined their duties today. Prof Maharjan, TU VC, today unveiled his plans amid a press meet. He said he was going to expand TU as a research-oriented university that imparts international level education to its students.
He said, “I would be introducing new programmes that give research-oriented and self-reliant type of education, in addition to maximum utilisation of available resources in the university.”
He stated that he would be focusing on regularising academic calendar of the university, implementation of rules, mitigating political influence in academic sector and making the curriculum relevant and modern. He said, “The university would speed up all pending work such as giving autonomy to campuses, advertising vacancies through TU Service Commission, solving the problems of contract teachers and employees.”
Since the rector and registrar of TU are retiring soon, he said he needed competent persons in these positions to assist him.
