Management committee of Bhairahawa’s Universal College of Medical Sciences and Teaching Hospital today decided to shut the college indefinitely as tension flared up on the college premises, following students’ agitation for the past five days.
“As the situation became unruly and there were chances of violence, the management committee decided to shut the college indefinitely, said Diwakar Pandey, academic coordinator of the college, adding that the management has served an ultimatum to the students to vacate the college hostel within 24 hours.”
Agitating students have demanded reduction in examinations fee, payment facilities as per the university provision during internship, resource-rich library, security management, and good hostel management, among others.
The agitating students have padlocked the department of health education and account section. According to Pandey, the college has formed a seven member talks committee under the coordination of college Vice-principal BH Srivastav. However, they couldn’t proceed with talks as the students failed to form a talks panel.
According to DSP Deepak Neupane, students have not come for talks even on the fifth day of their stir. Established in 1998 with the affiliation of Tribhuvan University, there are more than 1,500 medical students, including those from India and Sri Lanka.
