Tribhuvan University mulling to revise its curricular structure

 In a bid to improve the quality of education, Tribhuvan University (TU), the oldest university of the country, is mulling to revise its curricular structure so as to make it relevant to contemporary needs.

Around a hundred officials from TU and its constituent campuses have converged in Sauraha of Chitwan from Monday for this purpose. The meeting will continue for the next three days.The gathering of university officials follows the government´s decision to make necessary amendments to the decade-and-half old higher education policy. 

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has decided to revise the policy. The higher education policy came into existence in 1998. Since, the government has not made revised the policy. 

According to vice-chancellor of TU Hera Bahadur Maharjhan, TU officials will discuss how TU curriculum can be made time-relevant. TU will also recommend necessary changes in the existing the higher education policy. 

“Enrollment in subjects like history, Sanskrit, and political science, among others, in TU has dropped drastically. We will develop strategies to lure students into such subjects,” said Maharjhan. 

The meeting will dwell on concept papers on improving the existing higher education policy and endorse Shauraha declaration. The meeting will also focus on problems faced by constituent campus across the country and chalk out plans to improve their status.

Meanwhile, Gun Nidhi Neupane, rector at TU, said the government should also take initiatives to create educational environment and allot budget for research on different subjects.
