Teachers against Education Act ordinance

Himalayan News Service

April 05, 2014

Teachers have warned of agitation if the ordinance on the eighth amendment to the Education Act is endorsed by President Ram Baran Yadav. Chairman of All-Nepal Teachers Organisation Gunaraj Lohani took exception to the ordinance, which has not mentioned the previous agreements between teachers’ organisations and the Ministry of Education.

Speaking at an interaction organised by Education Journalists Group, Lohani blamed the government of keeping them in dark regarding the contents of the forwarded ordinance. The ordinance is one among various ordinances forwarded by the Baburam Bhattarai-led government, which have drawn flak from all corners.

It should be noted that the president has kept mum on all the ordinances so far forwarded after the dissolution of the House in May.

Responding to Lohani’s concerns and warning, Deputy Spokesperson at Education Ministry Rojnath Pande said the ministry decided to forward the ordinance to implement the school reform programme which has been pending for the last two years. “The repeated attempts to amend the Education Act had been unsuccessful and the entire school education sector had suffered as a result,” added Pande. He asked teachers to reach consensus to ensure approval of the ordinance.

Several teachers unions had met President Ram Baran Yadav recently and urged him not to promulgate the ordinance, saying their demands and concerns were not addressed in the proposed ordinance.
