Student unions warn Plus Two colleges with foreign names

Student unions today threatened to take stern action against Plus Two colleges if they do not bother to change their foreign names. All Nepal National Independent Students Union-Revolutionary (ANNISU-R) today warned of shutting down the colleges with foreign names if they pay no heed to their call to switch to Nepali names.

Himal Sharma, ANNISU-R president, said they have a policy against privatisation of schools and investment in what he called ‘unnecessary’ activities. Sharma said they halted the registration of new private schools as part of their campaign against privatisation. The colleges concerned should change their foreign names because the Education Ministry has sent them circulars to this effect, he said. Sharma threatened to shut down the Plus Two colleges that refuse to change foreign names.

He alleged that education mafias were destroying education in community schools in a planned way and promoting private school education.

President of the Nepali Congress-aligned Nepal Students’ Union, Ranjit Karna, said the use of foreign names is against nationality.

Sarad Rasaili, ANNISU-R cadre close to the Mohan Baidhya-led CPN-Maoist, said they plan to enforce a two-day education strike next week against all kinds of malpractices in the education sector.

He said, “Schools and colleges have become an emporium where parents and students can choose their desired item by paying money.”

Umesh Shrestha, president, Higher Secondary Schools Association Nepal, pointed out the lack of monitoring and supervision in the education sector and underscored the need for a reward and punishment system.

He also blamed political interference for the deteriorating state of the education sector.

According to Suprabhat Bhandari, president of the Guardians Association of Nepal, some Plus Two colleges spend more than five million in advertisements. He said, “Rather than investing such a huge sum on advertisement, they should invest to improve the quality of education.”

Meanwhile, Prof Hem Kumar Mishra, vice chairperson, Higher Secondary Education Board, informed that the board has formed a taskforce to monitor Plus Two colleges.

He said, “On the recommendation of the taskforce, we will take action against Plus Two colleges found flouting rules and regulations.”
