Eight students’ unions affiliated to various opposition parties today said they were jointly launching protest programmes against the government to end all kinds of anomalies in the education sector, especially at the Plus Two level and Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT).
Earlier, the student unions used to stage protest in academic institutions and government bodies separately on the same issues. Nepal Student Union (NSU) aligned to Nepali Congress and All Nepal National Independent Students Union-Revolutionary (ANNISU-R) aligned to CPN-Maoist had earlier launched various protest programmes separately against the big hoarding boards of Plus Two colleges and the foreign names of these colleges. The unions had also separately padlocked CTEVT.
U P Lamichhane, spokesperson, NSU said that a meeting was held today on raising common issues in education sector together.
He said that today’s meeting decided to stage a sit-in before CTEVT on July 26, gherao the Ministry of Education on July 27 and hold an interaction with the concerned on July 29 in the first phase.
He further said that they had decided to launch further protest programmes in the coming days if the government failed to end anomalies and provide free education to children up to the secondary level (Grade XII as per the School Sector Reform Plan).
They have also demanded that the government implement all agreements reached between student unions and the government in the past, including establishment of one Plus Two college with Science faculty in each constituency.
